Michael worked 13 years (1987- 2000) at the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) which was dismantled in 1992 and replaced by Crown Research Institutes (CRIs). His role continued in the newly formed Crop & Food Research, which later merged with Hort Research to become The NZ Institute for Plant and Food Research (PFR). PFR then merged with other CRI’s to become the Bioeconomy Science Institute (BSI)

From 2000 to 2008, he lived in the UK travelling and working as a fraud investigator for the UK Government’s Insolvency Service. He returned to NZ and joined Market Gardeners Ltd (Trading as MG Group) in 2009 as the New Product Development Manager. MG Group is a shareholder of the NZFTC.
